About OUT@AsoloRep
Now in its 13th season, OUT@AsoloRep is Sarasota’s premier cultural event connecting the LGBTQIA+ community with exceptional theatrical experiences.
OUT@AsoloRep’s roots can be traced back to October 12, 2009, when Asolo Rep was one of 150 theaters across the United States to participate in a live, remote and simultaneous global staged reading from Lincoln Center of The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later, which depicts the aftermath of Matthew Shepard’s death and its impact on the residents of Laramie, Wyoming.
The reading featured many of the actors who originally performed The Laramie Project with New York City’s Tectonic Theatre Project. An interactive post-show discussion followed, fueled by real-time digital participation via Twitter. The response was tremendous. "I think we were all surprised at how many people responded to [the reading]. It spread with almost no publicity, and we thought that there was a possibility of starting something new from that," noted Asolo Rep Producing Artistic Director, Michael Donald Edwards. As a result, community members, Asolo Rep staff and LGBTQIA+ supporters formed a steering committee, and OUT@AsoloRep was born.
Asolo Rep continues to enhance and expand this highly sought out program which regularly reaches sold-out status year after year.
